Baz Lad, facilities and information manager at Leicester General Hospital, said: “We needed to get rid of the pigeons and this seemed the most humane way of doing that. We aren’t killing them, just moving them on and it is much cheaper than all the repair bills.”

He estimates the pigeons alone are causing around £20,000 worth of damage a year

He added: “We have just come to the end of a three-month trial and already there are fewer pigeons around but we realise it is going to take a bit of time; it could be as much as a year.”

Sally Franklin, a local housing officer for the area, said: “I recently read an article about Stephen Sanders and the work he was doing at Leicester General Hospital. “He was flying a Harris Hawk on a regular basis in the hospital grounds and this was a deterrent to the pigeons. He has only been here for a few days but already we are noticing a difference in the area.”
